Bugs

The spring config files for configuration and database management are overly precocious. They do medium-complexity boolean algebra, and it's really hard to read. Either make it easier to read ("boolean" XML namespace handler for <boolean:and> and <boolean:select>) or move some of the logic into something other than Spring's XML language (Java? Groovy? Something else?).
